The CHAMELA Folding Chair

Po Shun Leong
1974

Some designs seem to have been made before design was invented as a trade, and The Chamela Chair certainly falls into this category, save for the fact that it was made by Po Shun Leong, whose mastery in furniture design is always reflected in the proportions and geometry of his pieces. Simple and unassuming as Leong himself, the almost invisible upgrades that he made to this chair are important: There are four bars holding the front and back legs together, two at the front and two at the back, for sturdiness, and rather than folding in half, the backrest and front legs meet when it’s folded. Like his fabulous Mahogany Chair, the seat is held from the armrests and is shaped as a pocket. Beautifully simple, this chair represents a significant commitment that we, at Clásicos Mexicanos, have made to expand the range of the historical narratives of Mexican 20th-century design.
