The Early Mexican Handmade Collection

Manuel Parra
Ca. 1960

Manuel Parra famously enjoyed recovering materials from demolitions, in particular demolitions of colonial houses and buildings, repurposing them in his own architecture and designs. Early Mexican Handmade, or EMH, is the name he flippantly gave to a series of tables, benches, and consoles that he assembled from found woods, often specifically for houses he was building. These pieces seem to have been simply thrown together, but a trove of existing drawings and plans betrays their apparent simplicity. Thus, each one of these pieces is the result of an encounter between found materials and design, half readymade, half repurposed.
